Temporary work belongs when it provides relevant evidence

DOL's 2026 Flexible Job Options guide describes temporary jobs as short-term positions often filled through staffing agencies and notes that they can build experience or support a return to work. CareerOneStop advises listing jobs, responsibilities, and accomplishments that relate to the target.

Do not apologize for a short assignment or disguise it as permanent employment. Label the work accurately, explain the employment relationship when useful, and spend the most space on actions and outcomes that help prove the next role's requirements.

Identify the relationship

Employer, staffing agency, client, and worksite are not always the same

CareerOneStop distinguishes temporary-agency workers from independent contractors: in the agency model, the agency employs and pays the worker while the client receives the work. Your own records, agreement, pay statements, tax forms, and application instructions should determine how you name the relationship.

A resume label does not determine employee or independent-contractor classification. Do not rename agency employment as self-employment, call a client the employer when it was not, or use contractor as a generic synonym for every short role. Grouping is a visual choice, not a new employment history. Retain each assignment's role, client or approved category, and dates. Do not merge separate assignments into continuous work or stretch overall agency-registration dates across periods when no work occurred.

Write the heading

Make the role and temporary context easy to parse

Lead with the function the reader needs to understand: accurate role, employer or staffing agency, approved client context, location when useful, and dates. Temporary, Seasonal, Fixed-term, or Agency Assignment can clarify why an entry was short when the label is true.

Temp-to-hire describes an arrangement or possibility, not a guaranteed conversion. Use that phrase only when it was the real arrangement, and never rewrite a temporary assignment as permanent because the client later hired you. Show the permanent role as a new dated entry.

Describe contribution and outcomes, not the short duration

Write bullets with the same evidence standard used for permanent work: action, relevant context, supported scope, and outcome. Short assignments may show rapid onboarding, peak-volume support, a completed deliverable, coverage, cleanup, migration, or process continuity, but include those claims only when the records support them.

Dates and gaps

Short assignments do not authorize a continuous timeline

Use accurate month-and-year dates and keep an honest break between assignments. An agency roster, candidate profile, or availability period is not the same as paid work. Do not backdate a relationship to registration or extend it through inactive periods.

Confidentiality

Use approved client names and releasable project details

A client name can clarify an assignment, but a resume does not override a confidentiality agreement, privacy obligation, or security rule. If the client cannot be named, use a truthful category such as regional hospital or consumer-products manufacturer without implying a more prestigious identity.

Remove private customer data, internal system details, unreleased products, protected financial figures, credentials, access information, and proprietary methods. Generalize only enough to protect the information while preserving an accurate description of your work.

Applications

Match the resume to fields that may request more detail

A concise private-sector resume may group assignments, while an application can require each employer, position, date, hours, salary, supervisor, or reason for leaving separately. Follow the application and keep those answers consistent with the underlying history.

DOL federal-resume guidance says to include positions temporarily held and provide the details required by the announcement. USAJOBS currently asks for employer, title, dates, hours per week, and experience showing qualifications. A private-sector grouping does not replace those required fields.

Federal appointments

Do not confuse a federal temporary appointment with agency temp work

A federal temporary appointment has its own appointing authority, duration, and application record. Identify the actual federal employer, position, series or grade when applicable, dates, hours, and temporary status as the announcement requires.

Do not add competitive status, career tenure, promotion eligibility, or conversion rights that the appointment did not provide. The job announcement and official personnel record control, not a simplified resume label.

AI boundaries

AI can organize assignments, but it cannot reconstruct the relationship

AI cannot know which organization employed or paid you, whether a client may be named, when an assignment truly began or ended, whether inactive agency time counts as employment, or whether a worker was legally an employee or contractor.

Supply verified facts and remove confidential content before using AI. Reject invented clients, continuous date ranges, permanent titles, conversion claims, metrics, classification conclusions, and merged outcomes.

Check relationship, dates, relevance, and disclosure together
